THE Armed Forces of the Philippine (AFP) deployed three military choppers to help the local government unit of Albay manage the fire, which engulfed over 6,000 hectares of grassland in Rapu-Rapu Island, a military official said Monday.

Albay Tactical Operations Group 5 chief Luisito Angeles Jr. said the Huey II helicopter and another chopper from Davao went immediately over the burning forest to dump water on it to avoid the spread of the fire while the AW3 Sokol chopper was dispatched to conduct an aerial reconnaissance and to assess the initial damage.

Angeles said the fire started Sunday morning along the grassy portion of Rapu-Rapu Island threatening families in the mainland villages of Poblacion, Morocboron, Sitio Acal, Mananao, Guadalupe, Buenavista.

Reports said over 2,000 families have already evacuated due to the fire.

"Kaingin (slash-and-burn farming) was the possible cause of fire accompanied by the strong winds," Angeles said.

The military official said the Philippine Air Force will continue to assist the local government of Albay in the on-going crisis situation. (HDT/Sunnex)
