DFA urges outbound Pinoys to register as OAVs-A A +A

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) urged Tuesday Filipinos headed outside the country to already register as overseas absentee voters (OAV) even before going abroad.
In a statement, the DFA said overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), immigrants, seafarers, dual citizens and students studying abroad already set to leave can register as OAV at the newly launched Overseas Voter Registration Center (OVRC) in the Department of Foreign Affairs-Office of Consular Affairs (OCA) Macapagal Avenue, ASEANA Business Park.
"Those who are about to leave for overseas, and who are not yet registered as overseas voters, they may now register at the OVRC," said the DFA.
Registering as OAV allows Filipinos to vote in the forthcoming May 2016 presidential elections and subsequent polls for the positions of president, vice president, senators and party-list groups.
Aside from gaining the ability to exercise their rights to vote, the DFA said registering at the OVRC can also bode well for those renewing their passports.
"Their overseas voter registration stub issued by the OVRC will allow them access to the Passport Division's Courtesy Lane. They no longer have to set an appointment to apply for renewal," said the DFA.
Earlier, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it aims to gather one million new overseas voter registrants for the 2016 national polls.
OAV registration applications can be filed in any Philippine Foreign Service Posts until October 31, 2015. (HDT/Sunnex)
