THE Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) on Tuesday called on Filipino nurses and other healthcare professionals to maintain vigilance against fraudulent job offers bound for foreign countries being peddled online.

POEA Administrator Hans Cacdac said aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the field of healthcare must be wary of bogus job offers sent through e-mails, and posted in social media sites.

"Applicants should just ignore such e-mail stating that they have been selected for a nursing position in hospitals they have not even applied for," said Cacdac.

"Job applicants are also warned on supposed job opportunities spread through social media like Facebook and Twitter," he further said.

The labor official cited as an example the job offer allegedly coming from Kingston General Hospital (KGH), which is based in Ontario, Canada.

Cacdac noted how the KGH website has already stated that "it does not actively recruit nursing staff from abroad, nor does it recruit through e-mail, and will never ask job applicants to send money as part of the job application process".

In the said job offer sent through e-mail, the POEA chief related that applicants to pay an amount of P3,750 as registration fee for a mandatory training session.

The bogus e-mail also assures the applicant of immediate interview by the foreign employer, non-payment of placement and processing fees, free accommodation and food allowance, and other "too-good-to-be-true" benefits.

Cacdac, then, urged OFW applicants to use their access online to search for real job offers through legitimate recruiters.

"Instead, job seekers should just search the POEA website (poea.gov.ph) for available job orders or use the POEA application for smart phones and tablets," Cacdac said.

The POEA had previously launched its own mobile application, wherein aspiring OFWs can instantly check on the legitimacy of agencies trying to recruit them as well as the validity of the job orders dangled to them.

The POEA Mobile Application is available for download for free in IOS and Google Play. (HDT/Sunnex)
