PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima, in top-level command conference on Tuesday, urged police commanders to either improve their performance or leave the service.

PNP Public Information Office (PIO) head Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac said Purisima called on the PNP Command Group, Director Staff, Regional Directors and Directors of National Support Units to talk about the worsening criminality in the country.

Purisima said police commanders should review or if needed should revise their security plan to ensure its effectivity in the areas of their jurisdiction and should strengthen the investigative capability of lower police units down to the precinct level to ensure successful prosecution of cases that will lead to higher rate of conviction of criminal offenders particularly in drug cases.

In support to the overall anti-crime campaign, Purisima also ordered the intensified 24/7 mobile random checkpoints that "should be felt by the people they have sworn to protect."

Purisima said police commanders who would not be able to comply with his directive of ensuring the peace and order in their areas of responsibility will face "serious sanctions."

However, Sindac said Purisima did not give time line for he does not want the integrity of the investigation to sacrifice.

"It is not his usual style to give time line para hindi sila gumawa fall guy para hindi ma-sacrifice integrity ng investigation. Ayusin ninyo 'yan bago ako ang umayos niyan, iyon ang hamon ng ating Chief PNP sa admin, investigative and operations," Sindac said.

Purisima reiterated that "training is a continuous activity for the police commanders and to the personnel under them.

On Monday, Malacanang Palace expressed frustration over the worsening slaying incident in the country and urged the PNP to review the system and improve and intensify their anti-criminality campaign. (Sunnex)
