TWO brand new transformers were provided for Albay to address the worsening problem of rotating brownouts in the province, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday.

In a report, the NDRRMC said according to the Albay Power Electric Corporation (APEC), the power provider of the province, a brand new 10-megavolt ampere transformer arrived at the Bintano Station in Legazpi City on Monday while the other one is still being transported from Manila.

However, the APEC said the installation of the two transformers will not totally ease the problem on power shortage but it will prevent "further damage to the already compromised distribution system."

The NDRRMC raised the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) status in the whole province to yellow alert so as to monitor the incidents of fire in the areas experiencing rotating brownout.

The NDRRMC also advised business establishment and households to take precautionary measures to avoid the start of fire.

On May 26, the APEC deliberately cut-off power supply feeding Barangay Batino substation to conduct routine maintenance work, which resulted to power outage in several areas in the province.

The completion of the maintenance, according to the APEC will be on June 4.

On June 2, the first day of classes, Albay Governor Joey Salceda suspended classes in 13 public schools in Legaspi City due to the ongoing power outrage.

Salceda said the atmosphere inside the classroom without electric fans, especially under the humid weather, will not be conducive for learning and might cause stress and illness to the students.

Affected schools were Bogtong, Rawis, Bigaa, Arimbay, Bitano, Dita, Bagong Abre, San Joaquin, Padang, Buragwis, Dapdap, Puro and Lamba Elementary School. (Sunnex)
