THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday advised the public that the popular weight-reducing drug known as "Bangkok" pills being sold in the market are actually considered illegal in the country.

In an Advisory 2014-042, the FDA said that Bangkok Pills are not registered with the concerned Philippine government agency. "Therefore, it is not allowed to be sold or placed in the market," said the FDA.

In addition, the health agency said advertisement, promotion and sale of the said products is an outright violation of the provisions of Republic Act 3720 as amended by RA 9711.

The FDA Act of 2009 prohibits the manufacture, importation, exportation, sale, offering for sale, distribution, transfer, non-consumer use, promotion, advertisement of any health product, which is not registered with the FDA.

"All consumers are hereby advised to be more vigilant and critical about on-line and printed advertisements so as not to fall prey to the marketing schemes of unscrupulous companies," said the FDA.

The public is also being urged to report any establishment found to continuously sell Bangkok Pills through email at report@fda.gov.ph or at telephone numbers 857-1900 local 1051/857-1939.

Aside from being illegal, the FDA underscored that Bangkok pills have been found to contain drug substances that may pose dangers to the consumers.

These include Ephedrine, Bisacodyl, Furosemide, Phentermine, and Fenfluramine.

"In combination, these drug substances can cause hallucination, paranoia, insomnia, respiratory problems, hypertension, and development of heart valve abnormalities, kidney failure and even death," FDA said.

"Bangkok" pills are a slimming product advertised, promoted and offered for sale on the internet.

Among its claims include having appetite suppressant (duromine); having diuretic effect by flushing out excess water thru urination and sweating; increasing energy; result to massive thirst so one drinks more water that he will also flush out, hence cleansing of one's system; fat burner; and excreting all stuff taken the whole day.
