Comelec: No politician received poll funds from Napoles-A A +A
Wednesday, May 28, 2014
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Wednesday that no politician got campaign contributions in recent elections from alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Napoles.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said this was based on the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (Soces) submitted by senatorial candidates, party-list groups and political parties.
“I assure you, we did not see anything because we started looking at our records when the Napoles' name came out, if she had contributed to the campaign funds of politicians, but we found nothing," he said, adding the Soces can be accessed by the public.
Also, the poll body chief said they will be conducting another review of the Soces in 2007, 2010 and 2013 polls.
Napoles stated in her affidavit submitted to the Senate Blue Ribbon committee that Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Francis Escudero and former senator Manny Villar benefited from the scam and that these individuals got campaign funds from her in the past.
Cayetano and Escudero belied the allegation while Villar's wife, Senator Cynthia Villar, earlier said she may file a case against Napoles for her statementsm, which allegedly do not have documents to support them.
Last year, Brillantes said they found one congressional candidate in Pasig City that received P30,000 from “Mr. and Mrs. Napoles,” and a party-list group, identified as Ang Samahan ng mga Mangangalakal Para sa Ikakaunlad ng Lokal na Ekonomiya Inc (A-Smile) was a recipient of P200,000 contribution from pork barrel scam whistleblower Benhur Luy.
Under the Omnibus Election Code, all candidates are required to file their Soces to the Comelec within 30 days after Election Day containing “the full, true and itemized statement of all contributions and expenditures in connection with the election.”
Failure to do so could result in filing of election offense cases, which carry the penalties of one to six years imprisonment, removal of right to vote, and disqualification from holding public office. (FP/Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
