THREE bills have been filed in the House of Representatives seeking to establish hospitals similar to Philippine Heart Center, Philippine Lung Center, and Philippine Children's Medical Center in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
The bills filed by Alay Buhay Party-list Representative Wes Gatchalian seek to address the noticeable disparity in terms of specialty hospital visibility between Metro Manila and regions in the Visayas and Mindanao.
"These recognize the need for government to ensure, that specialty hospitals (level 3) be widely distributed geographically across the country being an archipelagic state, instead of its concentration in the National Capital Region (NCR," Gatchalian said.
The lawmaker said the bills hope to attend to a decentralization of the National Capital Region so that those living far from the metropolis can also share in the benefits of the urban centers of the country.
Gatchalian said that by establishing facilities in the Visayas and Mindanao, patients and vulnerable groups such as the urban and rural poor will be able to receive the same quality medical treatment as offered in NCR.
"This would be a positive development especially for our Visayan and Mindanaoan constituents, who do not have the financial means to travel and consult with medical experts in Metro Manila… the medical care and service provision across the country will be improved, thereby providing hope to every Filipinos wherever situated, and making them feel the presence of the national government in their midst," Gatchalian said.
The bill said that the inequity in hospital care will not only be dealt with but the quality of health services and health spending will be distributed on a nationwide basis as well, making health services more inclusive. (Sunnex)
