ONE of the suspects in the election-related massacre of 58 people in Maguindanao in 2009 was arrested by authorities on Wednesday evening.

Chief Superintendent Benjamin Magalong of the Philippine National Police (PNP) - Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said fugitive Warden Kusain Legawan, a former police officer, was arrested in Barangay Tanyag, Upper Bicutan, in Taguig City.

Magalong said that aside from 36 counts of murder, Legawan is also facing charges of malversation of government property for allegedly using the firearm issued to him by the PNP to commit the crime.

However, Magalong said they have yet to determine the extent of Legawan's participation in the murder of 58 people, including 30 journalists and relatives of a candidate for governor in Maguindanao province in 2009.

The CIDG director said the authorities have already arrested 115 of the 194 suspects, including the alleged masterminds. (Sunnex)
