THE new mayor of Gonzaga town in Cagayan province has been sworn in, less than 24 hours after the shooting death of Mayor Carlito Pentecostes on Monday, April 21.

Cagayan police director Senior Superintendent Gregorio Lim said Vice Mayor Rene Salvanera took over the helm of Gonzaga municipality on Tuesday.

Pentecostes was shot dead by unidentified armed men in camouflage uniforms while he was about to deliver a speech during a flag-raising ceremony at the town hall.

Meanwhile, the Army's Commanding General in Northern Luzon Lieutenant General Gregorio Catapang said operations at the Gonzaga Municipal Hall have returned to normal Monday following the shooting incident.

"Kumpleto naman ang tauhan nila doon at wala namang sinirang gusali o tanggapan ang mga suspect kaya normal na ang operasyon," he said.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is still in pursuit of the mayor's attackers, as some evidences have been recovered at the crime scene, including the getaway vehicle used by the suspects. (Sunnex)
