MEMBERS of the majority bloc in the House of Representatives vowed to scrutinize the constitutionality of the proposed Bangsamoro Law to make sure that the measure will withstand legal challenge before the Supreme Court.

House Deputy Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas said the prosecution team during the impeachment trial of former Chief Justice Renato Corona will be revived to form part of the team that will place the bill under strict legal study.

Fariñas said the Corona prosecution team has been alerted by the House leadership on the Bangsamoro proposal but its exact role has not been confirmed.

"Yes, I was told that the Corona impeachment group will be tapped for the Bangsamoro bill," Fariñas said.

Fariñas said that constitutional issues raised against the Bangsamoro basic law will be the center of concern as far as his legal know-how is concerned.

Aside from Fariñas, the House leadership is also expected to tap the following to share their legal expertise on the Bangsamoro measure: Deputy Speaker Giorgidi Aggabao (Isabela) and Elpidio Barzaga (Cavite); Sherwin Tugna (CIBAC party-list); Rey Umali (Mindoro Oriental); Marlyn Agabas (Pangasinan); Neri Colmenares (Bayan Muna party-list); Kaka Bag-ao (Dinagat Island) and committee on justice chairperson Niel Tupas (Iloilo).

The proposed Bangsamoro measure is expected to be filed when regular legislative sessions start on May 5.

The bill is expected to be referred to the committees on local governments, Muslim Affairs, revision of laws and peace, unification and reconciliation.

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte has vowed to prioritize the proposal when it reaches the House of Representatives. (Sunnex)
