MALACANANG defended Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares on Monday for reminding Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao of his tax obligation shortly after his victory over American boxer Timothy Bradley.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Henares was not trying to be a "spoiler" to Pacquiao's current happiness.
"As far as I know from Commissioner Henares, they have been working with Congressman Pacquiao on his… If I remember, that’s liabilities from 2008 or in 2009? So perhaps, it was just a reminder. At this point, I don’t think that she meant to be a spoiler to his victory," she said.
"We don’t mean to make it hard for Congressman Pacquiao," she added.
Valte said that Henares was just focused on her job of collecting taxes.
The BIR has been trying to collect over P2 billion in taxes, including penalties, from Pacquiao's earnings in his previous fights in the United States.
The lawmaker questioned this tax assessment before the Court of Tax Appeals. (SDR/Sunnex)
