A PARTY-LIST lawmaker urged top ranking government officials to resign their post for their failure to thwart criminality in the country.

In a privileged speech, Buhay Party-list Representative Lito Atienza challenged Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima to relinquish their post if they "cannot handle" their jobs.

"If you cannot handle your jobs, become private citizens yourselves. Kung hindi mo kaya ang trabaho mo, magmaneho ka na lang ng taxi para mapasaya mo ang mga dapat mong ipasyal," Atienza told Roxas.

The former Manila mayor cited the rising number of killings in Metro Manila and nearby places, including the shooting death of Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur Mayor Ukol Talumpa at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3; the rape cases involving young children in Cavite and Manila; the existence of drug dens in Batangas and Taguig City, and most recently, the mauling incident involving actor Vhong Navarro.

"The police are no longer working to protect our safety and security but their own agenda. Even if we impose double death penalty, the criminals will still get away if the police do not do their jobs effectively.” Atienza said.

The lawmaker also criticized Roxas for letting private blue guard handle the security of the host-comedian.

"Bakit blue guards ang magbabantay kay Vhong? Dapat our very own policemen should secure him. Kung hindi kaya ng police bantayan si Vhong Navarro, paano pa yung ordinary citizens?" Atienza said.

The lawmaker's youngest son Kim is Navarro's close friend and fellow cast in the noontime show "It's Showtime" of ABS-CBN.

Atienza insisted that Roxas should assert his leadership and the agency he is heading should work doubly hard and use all its available resources not only in crime prevention but also putting criminals in jail. (Sunnex)
