WHILE most people in the metro are bitten by the "Ice Bucket Challenge" bug, comedian and television host Joey de Leon reminded participants to not forget the reason behind this cause.

De Leon took to image-sharing application Instagram to post a photo of him holding a banner, which says: "Don't nominate if you don't donate!"

The "Ice Bucket Challenge" is aimed at raising awareness and research funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

In the United States alone, approximately 5,600 people are diagnosed with this condition each year. The ALS Association (ALSA) said people with ALS die two to five years after diagnosis.

Before hitting the Philippine soil, the "Ice Bucket Challenge" already made rounds in the United States and in Europe.

Among the Hollywood names who participated in this cause include Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Alba, Jason Sudeikis, Olivia Wilde, Neil Patrick Harris, Bradley Cooper, Josh Hutcherson, Kevin Bacon, Adam Sandler, Emma Stone, Jamie King, Chris Evans, Will Smith, Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah Winfrey, Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr., and Tom Hanks.

In the Philippines, stage actress Lea Salonga is among the first celebrities who took the challenge.

Salonga, who donated money to ALS Association and was doused with ice cold water, nominated Aga Muhlach and "The Voice" coach, both of whom accepted the challenge.

From then on, the Ice Bucket Challenge spiraled in show business. Queen of All Media Kris Aquino was even soaked in ice cold water on national television.

The recent names who accepted the challenge and made donations to ALSA are Anthony Taberna, Korina Sanchez, Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, Anne Curtis, Bureau of Internal Revenue chief Kim Henares and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima. (Sunnex)
