ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra will revisit the timeless classics of Ryan Cayabyab in its first Spotlight Series on May 3 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo.

Dubbed "The Music of Ryan Cayabyab," the event pays tribute and celebrates the 60th birthday of the maestro. It will also showcase his well-loved hits, songs from musicals, film scores and sacred works.

Cayabyab's music will be interpreted by a 42-piece orchestra and a 70-piece choir.

"It's going to be his popular songs. Mickey Munoz (executive director) put together a very good selection of his greatest hits. It will be my first time to conduct a concert of his music, always wanted to," said conductor/musical director Gerard Salonga.

Salonga added he's looking forward to this event as it's his chance to play the Maestro's works.

"He's my first music teacher. I went to Ateneo to be journalist. In the middle of it, I started to get interested in music and he (Cayabyab) said, 'before you go off to another country and study, I'll teach you muna. Seat in my class in UP and let's see'," he said.

Highlights of the tribute concert include Basil Valdez singing two among the 14 Cayabyab songs written specifically for him; a reunion of Mitch Valdes and Celeste Legaspi -- original leads of Katy! The Musical; Hajji Alejandro's original interpretation of Metropop song "Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika.

Organisasyon Ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit (OPM) president Ogie Alcasid will also grace the event with Bugoy Drilon, Piolo Pascual and Concert King Martin Nievera.

Tickets for the May 3 event are available thru Ticketworld at 891-9999. (Sunnex)
