JAKE Cuenca is reaping the rewards of his hard work after his performance in independent movie "Nuwebe" earned him a Best Actor nomination at the 4th Queens World Film Festival in New York City.

"I've been so happy about that. Natutuwa ako na napapansin ako sa ibang bansa. Just the nomination alone na-boost up yung confidence ko," said the actor at the press launch of "Ikaw Lamang," his newest series with Kim Chiu and Coco Martin.

According to Cuenca, it took them one week to film the movie and he never expected to get his first nomination in the United States for this project.

"Literal na indie talaga yun. I'm so proud of that movie and I'll always do another movie with direk Joseph Laban. It's something so heartfelt, so real. I'm so happy that the States noticed it."

Cuenca will compete for the award opposite Kevin Thomas Costigan ("Killer"), Robert Nolan ("Mourning Has Broken"), Dexter Camara ("Silencio"), Rob McClure ("Recursion"), Robbie Capaldi ("Brighton"), Daniel Kyri ("Pefect Day") and Chaske Spencer for "The Hero Pose".

Written and directed by Laban, the film is inspired by the actual story of one of the youngest mothers in Philippine history.

Aside from the actor, child star Barbara Miguel is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress category for the same movie.

After Queens, "Nuwebe" will be screened at Rome Independent Film Festival in Italy, CinemAsia Film Festival in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Festival Cinematografico Internacional in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Cuenca said he is proud of the movies he did last year and pleased with the projects given to him during first quarter of 2014.

"I just want to do my best and I want to keep being different in every project. Natutuwa lang ako kasi lagi nila ako binibigyan ng kakaibang proyekto," he said.

"I just want to act, period. Gusto ko lang umarte. I like to do roles that break boundaries, provocative ones, and I'm always going to push for something different, always. I don't like doing same thing over and over again," he added.

As of this posting, Cuenca is doing American movie "Awake." The said project will be screened soon in New York City. (Sunnex)
