THE most-watched talent competition in the States is back on the boob tube as it continues its search across America to find the next singing superstar.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, season 13 of "American Idol" officially kicked off this week featuring new judge, singer/actor Harry Connick Jr.

Connick seats alongside returning judges, musician Keith Urban and "Live It Up" singer Jennifer Lopez. Randy Jackson meanwhile serves as in-house mentor of the contestants.

This season, the Idol group travel to Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Detroit, Omaha, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco to mount auditions.

The judges will narrow down the competitors to a select group of semifinalists who will sing in front of a live studio and TV audience. Then, from this stage forward, the viewing public determines who will advance to become a finalist and who will go home.

After 12 seasons, "American Idol" has produced numerous hits and award-winning recording artists. Combined, Idol finalists have released more than 200 albums, made No.1 hits on the Billboard charts over 400 times, and garnered more than 250 million iTunes downloads.

It also featured a number of Filipino talents such as Fil-Americans Camile Velasco and Jasmine Trias from Season 3, Ramiele Malubay of Season 7, Thia Megia who joined Season 10, and most recently Jessica Sanchez, who made it in the final stage of Season 11.

This month, "American Idol" returns in our local channel via ETC. The two-day premiere continues Friday at 6 p.m. with primetime telecast at 9 p.m.

ETC will also carry the local broadcast of the entire competition. For details, check their Twitter (@etc_channel) and Facebook (facebook.com/etctv) page. (Sunnex)
