Metrobank contributes P20M for Manila Cathedral restoration-A A +A

METROBANK Group Chairman, Dr. George S.K. Ty, through GT-Metro Foundation (GTMF) and Metrobank Foundation (MBFI), donated P20 million for the restoration of the Manila Cathedral-Basilica's sanctuary, the basilica's inner sanctum, as the Ty family's contribution for the preservation of one of the country's historical landmarks of faith.
The donation was formally turned over to His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, chairman of the Manila Cathedral-Basilica Foundation (MMCBFI) Inc., during the 35th Anniversary Celebration of Metrobank Foundation held at the Le Pavillon, Metropolitan Park, Pasay City on January 29.
The Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica, also known as the Manila Cathedral, was built in the late 1500s in honor of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Principal Patroness of the Philippines.
GTMF Executive Director Aniceto Sobrepeña said the donation is aligned with the Foundation's thrust of strengthening the Ty Family's legacy by supporting significant infrastructure projects that will benefit the society.
"In addition, the Ty family has a personal devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary thus, making this project close to their hearts," he said.
Exposure to calamities plus the normal wear and tear over time prompted the temporary closure of the cathedral in February 2012 for public safety, as well as to undertake a massive restoration project led by Cardinal Tagle.
"The contribution is timely as the cathedral's completion of the restoration is on its finishing touches. After being closed for two years, the Basilica is set to open on March 25, 2014," says MMCBFI Executive Director Msgr. Nestor Cerbo.
"Thank you so much for the goldness of your heart, which helps in making possible the restoration of the premier house of God in the Philippines," he added.
Since its establishment in 2009, GTMF has taken an active role in focusing the Ty family's philanthropic activities in the areas of health, environment, grants and legacy - where the donation for the Manila Cathedral main altar restoration falls under. (PR)
