THE idea is to keep our teeth clean in the hope of keeping them strong until old age. Five decades ago (or more), the ritual of cleaning the teeth was served with a pinch of salt and a crushed twig of a guava tree.

Today, we have a tube and a paste of many colors we call toothpaste, and presume that the fluoride content protects our teeth. But does it? One doctor told me years ago that fluoride is meant to be ingested and reach our teeth through our bodily systems, not applied on the teeth. Is that correct?
