ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog welcomes to the One Island-One Region concept proposed by officials of Negros Island.

Mabilog said he sees no problem with the concept because in Negros Occidental are also called Ilonggos and there is brisk trade between Iloilo and Bacolod and the rest of the Panay provinces.

"We can go to Bacolod and the people of Negros can go to us here in Panay and I don't think there is a problem in transportation, language used and even education and health services," he said.

There has always been a prevailing sentiment to unify the two Negros provinces into one region.

Negros Occidental is part of Western Visayas and Negros Oriental belongs to Central Visayas.

The one island-one region grouping has also found favor with the Visayan bloc in the House of Representatives.

"Iloilo City will always stand out and remain as the regional center of Western Visayas and of Panay Island provinces. We have no problem in Panay but in Negros, it will be a toss-up between Bacolod and Dumaguete cities as the Negros regional center," said Mabilog. (LCP)
