ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has said he supports the move of Representative Jerry P. Treñas to privatize the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD).

Mabilog said he is putting aside his early call for MIWD to give its water distribution function to the City Government amid complaints and protests against the water district and the prevailing water shortage.

The mayor also tasked the City Legal Office to study the possibility of water distribution by the city, excluding the water districts administrative and operational function in other franchised areas outside the city jurisdiction.

Treñas has cited reports conducted by World Bank and United States Agency for International Development that find privatization of water utilities as an alternative way to increase the efficiency of water delivery.

Treñas said the MIWD could follow the lead of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), which privatized its water distribution operations.

The MWSS privatization saved Metro Manila from a severe water crisis in the 1990s, when the expertise, financial resources, and experience in the water industry of the private concessionaires improved the water distribution system in Metro Manila, he said.
