Tuesday, August 26, 2014
MAYOR Jed Patrick Mabilog will bring to Marikina City the Iloilo City experience in river management.
The 2nd International River Summit will open on November 19-21 at the Marikina Hotel and Convention Center with a theme “Reviving Rivers, Rebuilding Civilization.”
President Benigno Aquino III will deliver a message in the closing of the three-day river summit that is expected to gather more than 1,000 international, national and local delegates.
The second International River Summit in Marikina City will raise the serious challenge to bring back rivers into the development agenda.
The first Philippine International River Summit was held in Iloilo City last May 30 to June 1, 2012. It showcased the importance of the Iloilo River as anchor to the Ilonggo way of life.
Mabilog will report on updates about the first river summit in Iloilo City, while Dr. Nick Schofield, chief executive officer of the Rivers of the World Foundation, is the tentative keynote speaker during the opening.
This global forum is conducted to address issues and challenges in river management by focusing on three dimensions of river management, which are governance; rehabilitation, restoration, and protection; and sustainable development.
More than 1,000 foreign and local experts in river management, climate change and biodiversity and other concerned delegates have converged in the Iloilo forum to share sustainable practices relative to river management.
As outcomes of this forum, the river network was created as proposed by the Rivers of the World based in Maryland, USA, and the declaration on Global River Initiatives, which will serve as the basis of all succeeding river summits and conferences. (LCP)
