DENR launches new greening program in Iloilo

ENVIRONMENT and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Ramon Paje launched on Thursday a new urban greening program along two new major highways in Iloilo City to be planted with Golden Shower and Fire trees.

The DENR chief was accompanied by Senate President Franklin Drilon and Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog in launching the new program by planting trees along the road at Centro Verde in Mandurriao district.

Drilon lauded the DENR initiative in regreening both sides of the city’s 14-kilometer President Corazon A. Aquino new highway known as the circumferential road and after four years, will show off yellow flowers for a Golden Shower Festival.


DENR will provide an initial 3,000 seedlings to be planted along the circumferential road.

Drilon said the DENR will also provide the planting materials of fire trees to be planted along the 14-kilometer diversion road up to the Iloilo Airport entrance in Cabatuan, Iloilo. The road is officially known as the Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue and the Golden Showers will encircle the Fire trees.

On the other hand, Paje and several officials of the agency graced the monthly meeting of the Iloilo Batiano River Development Council on July 31.

Mabilog said the DENR Secretary assured a P38-million commitment of financial assistance to the Iloilo Batiano River Rehabilitation Project and the council passed a resolution to effect the financial assistance.

Paje assured the DENR commitment will be included in the 2015 budget to be deliberated by the House Representative on August 28 in a move to improve the river water quality system.

Similarly, Paje assured another solar boat in addition to a solar boat donation of One Meal Foundation to be used in the river cruise program along the Iloilo River.

The DENR chief said DENR officials will be the first client of the solar boat by joining a river dinner cruise for delegates of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Ministerial Meetings in 2015 in Iloilo City.

Paje also announced the final schedule of Apec meeting on Food Security and the Blue Economy in Iloilo City on October 4-6, 2015 with DENR as lead agency. The meeting will be participated by some 1,500 delegates from 21 countries in Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Mabilog said the DENR is rushing up the clean-up of the Iloilo River.

Similarly, Double Dragon Corp will conduct a national dragon boat completion along the Iloilo River on August 23, 2014 as one feature in the celebration of the city’s Charter Day celebration on August 25.

The Ilonggo Senate President will grace the opening of the dragon boat competition.
