THE Iloilo City Council’s committee on ways and means will have to make a progress report during its regular session on Tuesday, July 8, regarding the committee-held public hearing and consultation on the proposed new schedule of zonal valuation on real properties in the city.

Committee chair Councilor Plaridel Nava admitted that he adjourned the public hearing immediately after Jinny Hermano of the City Treasurer’s Office came unprepared and could not answer the questions of the committee and the businessmen who attended the consultation.

Nava said he had informed Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog regarding the outcome of the public hearing on the proposed implementation of tax increases on real properties.

Mabilog advised a progress report be made and let the City Council decide on the matter.

Nava said the City Government is set to implement the new schedule of zonal valuation of real properties consisting of land, buildings and machineries after several years of delay.

However, eight business organizations in Iloilo City protested the projected tax increases, saying it is not the right time for real property tax hike, as the city is in the middle of promoting the friendly business climate and business boom here. (Lydia C. Pendon)
