THE Iloilo City Council has recommended the filing of criminal charges and estafa cases against persons or organizations selling public lands or lots.

Based on a committee report on Barangay Calumpang Ordinance No. 001, the village “prohibits the sale of public lands or lots and the construction of new dwelling units or structures and the movement or extension of fences at the shoreline, riverbanks along the barangay road, national road and other areas.”

Calumpang village chief Roberto Nino said he will lead in the filing of estafa charges against unscrupulous people selling public lands along the shoreline of his barangay.

He said the barangay ordinance only provides P1,000 fine against violators but assured that they will pass another ordinance or amend the existing one to provide a stiffer penalty, including imprisonment. (Lydia C. Pendon)
