City council acts on drunk driving

THE Iloilo City Council has unanimously approved a resolution filed by city Councilor Joshua Alim that calls for strict implementation of Republic Act 10586 or the “law against driving while drunk and under the influence of intoxicating drinks and substances”.

The Alim resolution calls for the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to lead in the campaign against drunk drivers within the jurisdiction of the city.

Alim disclosed that records of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) showed that in the city alone, 849 accident cases related to drunk driving were reported from January to December 2013, and 225 cases from January to March 2014.


Alim said the records a critical situation for accidents due to drivers under the influence of liquor and other harmful substances.

The city councilor said that the city is also planning to buy a breath analyzer but in the meantime, will have to accept with the ICPO simple steps of determining a drunk driver.

Similarly, the ICPO is also conducting mobile and stationary checkpoints against traffic violators and criminals.
