THE Iloilo Provincial Government will conduct a reforestation on the areas devastated by Super Typhoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan) last year, although it will take years for the trees to fully grow.
Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said that instead of doing nothing, he will mobilize everyone to help the government replace the trees uprooted by the monster storm.

Targeting 1.5 million tree replacements, the province-wide tree planting will start on June 28 this year during the celebration of Arbor Day at Barangay Madarag, San Enrique.
The activity is part of Defensor’s campaign, Action for Regreening and Transformation (ART) for Climate Change Adaptation (CCA).
ART for CCA is a yearly reforestation campaign that aims to propagate and preserve the endangered tree species like kamagong, acacia, as well as all sorts of mangrove species.
During the tree planting in San Enrique, a total of 6,000 assorted forest and fruit trees are expected to be planted by thousands of volunteers from various sectors of the society.
“For the past years, the world has advanced in science and technology. We have invented so many things to improve healthcare, transportation, and telecommunications. But none so far has created a tree,” Defensor said.
The governor said that in order to make sure the province will succeed in the campaign, the more than 3,000 Barangay Service Point Officers (BSPOs) stationed in 1,721 villages will be tasked to closely monitor and take good care of the seedlings.
In 2011, ART for CCA was able to plant 1.3 million fruits and forest trees where 833,087 (64.53 percent) seedlings survived, 1.6 million in 2012 (60.65 percent) survived, and 1.7 million in 2013 is still being monitored. (PIO)
