Mabilog to consult Aquino on MIWD mess-A A +A
Monday, June 16, 2014
ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said he will consult with President Benigno Aquino III regarding the operational mess of the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) when the president comes to the city tentatively scheduled on June 27, 2014 to inaugurate several infrastructure projects.
Mabilog said he is going to ask Aquino on the possibility of allowing the local government units served by the MIWD to manage and operate the water districts in their respective area.
MIWD is suffering from great mismanagement and the water district owes P120 million to its bulk water supplier Flo Water Resources for the unpaid 16 months delivery of bulk water, Mabilog said.
Flo Water has cut off its supply since Saturday, June 14, 2014 and water is being served to concessionaires on limited supply coming from the MIWD plant in Cabatuan and Sta. Barbara.
He said Passi City in central Iloilo successfully operates its own water district and that Iloilo City and the other MIWD-covered towns of Maasin, Cabatuan, Sta Barbara, Pavia, Oton and Leganes should also be given the privilege of operating their own water district.
Mabilog said that if given the chance to operate and manage its own water district, the city will find out ways to distribute water by seeking several water suppliers.
Mabilog even challenged the MIWD management, saying the water district management and operation must be returned to the local government units, especially Iloilo City when MIWD cannot sustain its operation efficiently.
By incurring another bank loan to pay another loan, the water district is now deep in its mismanagement operation and may come out from it, the city mayor said.
