THE Iloilo City Council has approved an ordinance requiring business establishments to have a courtesy priority express lane for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women at the point of sale and transaction areas only.

Councilor Nielex Tupas, main proponent of the bill, said the ordinance has actually expanded the coverage of the national law on courtesy lanes.

Under the new local measure, the courtesy priority lanes must have a signage, requirement for courtesy, cancellation of business permit for violators and the lane must include courtesy to pregnant women.

Tupas said the national law is very vague and does not specify a business signage, no specific provision for requiring a courtesy lane, no cancellation of business permit for violators and does not include pregnant women in the coverage.
