THE Traffic Management and Transport Regulation Office (TMTRO) is bracing for the June 2 school opening and will strictly implement regulations on designated parking, loading and unloading areas in Iloilo City.

TMTRO chief Engr. Jose Tengco assured this after briefing his men and agents on the projected increase of city population by Monday morning in time for the first day of school in both public and private schools.

He said the influx of students from the provinces to the city will make the TMTRO members busy in keeping the streets free from vehicle parking in recently expanded and widened streets in Tabuc Suba, Jaro and at the diversion road.

Iloilo City is the education capital of Western Visayas and hosts eight universities, more than 15 colleges and several training schools in the collegiate level on top of several high schools, elementary schools and kinder schools.

Last week, the City Council passed a regulation ordinance establishing the parking, loading and unloading areas for public utility jeepneys plying Jaro Liko NFA, Jaro Liko Tagbak and Leganes within the jurisdiction of Barangay Quintin Salas, Mc Arthur Drive in Jaro district, Iloilo City.

Tengco said the City Council also approved the pedestrianization program at Calle Real by closing the traffic from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Sunday starting July 6, in pursuit of a vision set forth in the 2011-2020 Iloilo City Comprehensive Land Use Plan (Clup 2011) of a pedestrianized downtown core.

TMTRO personnel will help the road closure from Plazoleta Gay up to the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand and allow pedestrians and walkers to enjoy the Calle Real and its rehabilitated heritage commercial buildings. (LCP)
