THE Iloilo City Council approved on Tuesday an ordinance establishing a route of operation of city loop public utility jeepneys (PUJs) plying along Gen Luna and Valeria streets.

Councilor Plaridel Nava, chairman of the Council committee on transportation, said the new traffic scheme and route for city loop jeepneys will cement the route placed under a traffic experimentation implemented in the last seven months hoping to decongest the route.

Nava said the experimentation is considered a success and there is a need for an ordinance to ensure the safe and effective regulation on the streets, establish vehicle stops and regulate the use of the same by private vehicles.

The new traffic scheme and route are for Villa Baybay PUJs coming from Seafront Arevalo passing Gen Luna St, turn right to Quezon St., proceed to Rizal Ma Clara to Ortiz and JM Basa fronting Plaza Libertad.

In reverse, from JM Basa to Rizal, turn right to Quezon, turn left to Delgado, turn right to Jalandoni, turn left to Gen Luna and traverse back to Arevalo.

Villa Mohon PUJs coming from Mohon terminal to Gen Luna, turn right to Quezon, proceed to Rizal St. In reverse, from Rizal turn right to Valeria, right to Gen Luna (Atrium) U-turn at Bonifacio Drive rotunda, back to Gen Luna, to MH del Pilar and Avanceña streets to point of origin.

Jaro Liko Tagbak PUJs from Tagbak terminal to Gen Luna, turn left to Mabini St., turn left to J de Leon. In reverse, from J de Leon turn right to Quezon St, turn left to Rizal St, turn left to Valeria, turn right to Gen. Luna (Atrium), turn left to Muelle Loney towards Drilon Bridge to point of origin.

All Jaro-CPU, Jaro Ungka ITGSI, Jaro Liko NFA, La Paz, Lapuz, Bo. Obrero, Baluarte, SM City proper and Mandurriao PUJs shall continue to ply the normal route.

Left turns and U-turns are not allowed from Gen Luna to entrance of Assumption Iloilo, Gen Luna to Quezon, from Quezon to Gen Luna, from Valeria to Gen Luna, from Gen Luna to St Paul’s Hospital except in emergency cases.

Any person who violates the ordinance shall pay a fine of P500 with the city treasurer’s office.
