THE Iloilo City Council is mediating between water supplier Flo Water and sole water utility Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) to settle their differences.

City councilor Plaridel Nava, chairman of the City Council’s committee on ways and means, said Flo Water chairman Rogelio Florete attended the tax incentive committee hearing on Monday, April 28, to ventilate his disappointment as an investor, the non-payment of water bills by the water district amounting P111 million incurred in 15 months.

Nava said Florete threatened to cut off the water supply by May 12, 2014 if MIWD can’t pay any amount to the supplied bulk water.

MIWD will also have to pay Prime Water Resources some P47 million for the water supply, which Prime Water buys from Flo Water to be injected in MIWD water lines.

Nava said the demand letter for payment has been ignored by MIWD for sometime in daily delivery of some 16,000 cubic meters of water intended for more than 32,000 water concessionaires in the city.

Nava said that to avert possible water crisis, the City Council passed a resolution inviting officials of MIWD, suppliers Flo Water and Prime Water Resources, and members of the City Council to a discussion over the situation.

Nava said it is time that the local government unit interferes in the misunderstanding between suppliers and MIWD and to answer the effect of waterless Iloilo City to constituents.

MIWD is sole water supplier to the city and municipalities of Leganes, Pavia, Oton, San Miguel, Sta Barbara, Cabatuan, and Maasin. The bulk of concessionaires are in Iloilo City with more than 22,000 concessionaires and the rest are in the covered municipalities.
