2014 Gawad Parangal awardees hailed

LOCAL chief executives and social workers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao were recognized during the 18th National Social Welfare and Development Forum and General Assembly in Iloilo City on Wednesday.

Among the outstanding government leaders were Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. and Quezon Governor David C. Suarez.

“If there is one component in public service, it is social work. It is the most rewarding and fulfilling. Some may not have asked for it or may not have felt the same way, but for those who understand its nature, you will observe that they never serve the rich; it is always the poor,” Defensor said.


Governor Suarez said the reward symbolizes the holistic social development programs and projects that they are implementing in their province.

Quezon has more or less P2-billion annual budget and almost 70 percent of it goes to social and infrastructure projects that aimed at improving the province’s state of education, health, and agriculture.

“Napakalaking karangan para sa akin at siempre sa lalawigan ng Quezon na nabigyan kami ng ganitong pagkilala. Isa po ito sa mga palagay ko po ay malaking karangalan na pwedeng matanggap ng isang gobernador,” Suarez said.

The Gawad Parangal award for excellence in social service was also rewarded to Bacoor City Mayor Strike Revilla, Lopez Mayor Isaias Ubana II of Quezon, and Bislig City Mayor Librado Navarro of Surigao Del Sur.

The Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines Inc. (ALSWDOP) also recognized their members who excelled in their work of helping the poor help themselves.

The awardees were Iloilo Provincial Social Welfare Officer Neneth Pador and Municipal Social Welfare Officers Anibel Arlan-Cayabat of Buenavista, Quezon Province and Marlon Baso of Kapangan, Benguet. (PR)
