City joins DOH call for safe street food

ILOILO City is joining the campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) on safe street food even during the summer season, said city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Mabilog said that food safety is a must to guarantee that the food will not cause harm to consumers when it is prepared and eaten on the streets.

He said the city’s sanitary inspectors must see to it that street foods are safe and fit for human consumption. 

Barbecue grills for pork and chicken innards and meat are popular during the summer months including street halo-halo stalls and ambulant peddlers selling fruit juices, fried and barbecue bananas, camote, sliced fresh fruits, and other street food.
The DOH is raising an alert on the “6S” of summer diseases namely; sore eyes, sunburn, sipon at ubo, suka at tae, sakit sa balat, and sakmal ng aso.


The DOH said one of the “6s” summer diseases is the diarrhea (Suka at tae) that follows consumption of contaminated food or drinks as food spoils easily during the hot summer months.                               
Children and adults are encouraged to wash their hands after going to the toilet and partake of the food.

The common causes of food and water-borne diseases include unsafe sources of drinking water, improper disposal of human waste, unhygienic practice like spitting anywhere, blowing or picking the nose, and unsafe food handling and preparation practices.
