THE Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas has alerted the public against six diseases during the summer season due to intense summer heat and drastic climate change.

The six common summer diseases, dubbed as “6S,” are sore eyes, sun burn, sipon at ubo, suka at tae, sakit sa balat, and sakmal ng aso (dog bite).

Here are some of the precautions recommended by the DOH:

* Sore eyes is spread by a virus and hand wash can limit its spread. The DOH said eye washing with breast milk has no scientific basis and warns on the use of eye drops without consulting a doctor.

* Sunburn can be avoided and prevented with the use of sunscreen-regulated outdoor activities. Drink 8 to 12 glasses of water every day to avoid heat stroke.

* Sipon at ubo easily spreads during summer as erratic weather brings sudden downpour from time to time.

* Suka at tae follows consumption of contaminated food or drinks. Always have oral rehydration salt solution at hand just in of bad diarrhea.

* Sakit sa balat or skin disease also abounds when one swims in dirty water or ill maintained public swimming pools. Apply corn starch (baking soda powder) to skin areas with prickly heat rashes characterized by tiny bumps or water blisters. Boil starts with swelling or redness of the skin and the center of infection liquefies as pus collects. It is caused by staphylococcus bacteria through direct skin contact with infected persons or surfaces.

* Sakmal ng aso can lead to rabies if dog bites are not washed and cared for. Make sure dogs are vaccinated against rabies.

Dr. Ma. Paz Corrales of the DOH said the diseases are controllable through frequent hand washing and personal hygiene.

Corrales said the public is advised to take extra precautions to avoid food poisoning, diarrhea, heat associated ailments, and recreation-associated injuries.

Avoid eating street food, if necessary, and cook food properly, she added.
