BICYCLE lanes must be extended to cover more mileage, said two top government officials following the successful first Iloilo Bike Festival in Iloilo City last Sunday.

Senate President Franklin Drilon said a 14-kilometer stretch from the municipality of Dumangas up to the Metropolis in Arevalo district and another 11-kilometer stretch from the diversion road up to the Iloilo airport will be considered as bicycle lanes for the Ilonggos to enjoy.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is also supportive of the plan to extend the bike lanes.

The bike festival last Sunday was participated by more than 1,000 bicycle riders in Iloilo and Guimaras. The bikers stop at local tourist attractions in the city to promote a sports tourism activity that pushes for healthy lifestyle, protects the environment with non-polluting means of transportation, and highlights the attractions in the local tourism circuits as biking route.

The Iloilo City tour leg started at the Megaworld area in Mandurriao, then to Jaro Plaza, La Paz Plaza, Plaza Libertad, Fort San Pedro, Muelle Loney, Calle Real, Arroyo Fountain, Gen. Luna, Molo Plaza, Arevalo Plaza, Carpenter’s Bridge, Iloilo River Esplanade, diversion road and back to starting point.
