THE Muslim community in Iloilo City has praised the signing of the Bangsamoro peace agreement between the Philippine Government headed by President Benigno Aquino III and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) chief Al Haj Murad Ibrahim on March 27 in Malacañang.

Sammy Hagimanan, spokesman of the Iloilo City Muslim community, said the more than 3,000 Muslims who are living in the city are not directly involved in the disagreement between the two Muslim political factions: the MILF and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

“We are living in peace and doing legitimate business in Iloilo City. We are happy for the peace agreement and strongly hope that it will work for the two factions and the Philippine government, as we are all Filipinos,” Hagimanan said.

Lawyer Abdul Kaer Alonto of the MNLF expressed hope and support for the peace agreement.

The peace agreement will hopefully ends the four decades of intense insurgency by the secessionist groups, Hagimanan added.

The Muslim community spokesman also expressed elation over the statement of Senate President Franklin M. Drilon, claiming the signing of the Bangsamoro agreement is not only for the Philippines, but also for the Asian neighbors that dream of peace, equality and prosperity as a nation.
