Guv confident to reach 9,000 boat donations-A A +A
Thursday, March 6, 2014
GOVERNOR Arthur Defensor Sr. is confident that the province can reach the desired 9,000 boat donations for the fishermen affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Iloilo province.
“Since there has been an overwhelming response from the private sector, we are very confident that we can reach the target,” Defensor said.
Defensor said that as of Thursday, close to P7-million cash donation was deposited in the province’s trust fund for the “Adopt a Fisherman” Program.
Calinog Mayor Alex Centena donated P240,000 from the “Linog sa Calinog,” a battle of the sounds held every February 12 of the year in celebration of the mayor’s birthday.
“All of these (cash) donations will be used to purchase the construction materials and engines needed for the boats,” said Defensor.
Since these donations are channeled through the province, a public competitive bidding will be held where a qualified contractor/supplier will be selected.
Provincial Agriculturist Ildefonso Toledo has issued a P5.7-million purchase request for gasoline engine, marine plywood, stainless shafting and propeller, copper nails, marine epoxy, paint and paint brush, nylon, polyvinyl chloride pipe and galvanize iron pipe.
Once the contractor/supplier is identified, all of the items will be delivered to the municipalities of Estancia, Concepcion, San Dionisio, Banate, Batad, Ajuy and Barotac Viejo within a week after the receipt of the Notice to Proceed from the Bids and Awards Committee.
As of February 28, records from the Provincial Agriculture’s Office said there are more than 10,000 fisherfolk who lost their fishing vessels due to the super typhoon. (PR)
