57 students receive fare assistance-A A +A
Tuesday, March 4, 2014
A TOTAL of 57 students of the Iloilo City Community College (ICCC) are recipients of the special fare assistance program of the City Government.
Under the program, selected students will be given a special identification card. Public jeepneys involved in the program will have stickers on their front shields and will accommodate only two students at a given time for free transport ride.
Councilor RLeone Geroche said the program is also in cooperation with three transport organizations: the Iloilo City Alliance of Drivers Association, Iloilo City Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association, and Iloilo City Loop Alliance of Operators and Drivers Association.
Geroche, chairman of the committees on public utilities and environmental protection, said they conducted a survey on the reasons why some students of ICCC cannot attend their classes. One of the reasons was they do not have enough money for fare.
The City Government signed a memorandum of agreement with the transport groups and the ICCC on Monday for the implementation of the program.
Geroche said the students can ride the jeepneys from their residence to the ICCC and back.
