THE remaining 80 families who evacuated due to oil spill in Barangay Botongon, Estancia can return home anytime this week, said Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. following his inspection of the village on weekend.

“The condition of the affected area has improved and you can no longer smell the bunker fuel,” he said.

The governor’s recommendation has concurrence from the representatives of Department of Health and the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources during the regular meeting of Task Force Power Barge 103 on Monday.

But Defensor emphasized that those homeless can still stay at the evacuation center in Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College-West Campus.

“If they don’t have houses or if they failed to rebuild it, we will let them stay at the evacuation center and wait for the government’s bunkhouses to finish,” he said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways is presently constructing bunkhouses good for 100 families in Barangay Gogo, Estancia. Each unit measures 4.8 x 3.5 meters and made of galvanized iron sheets, plywood and concrete. The unit costs P835,000 each. (PR)
