TWELVE fishermen from Victorias City, Negros Occidental have been arrested for illegal fishing during a patrol operation of Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat in northern Iloilo.

The task force led by Police Officer 3 (PO3) Ariel Palmera and PO1 Bernard Tanoy reported that the fishermen were caught engaging in trawl fishing 2.7 kilometers from Baligiuan Island, Barangay Mangalabang, Concepcion earlier this week.

The arrested fishermen were onboard three motorboats namely “Shen,” “Jessa,” and “Going Merry.” The boats were owned by Grace Villaruz, Jimmy de la Cruz, and Jimboy Jaro.

Concepcion Mayor Millard Villanueva, however, accepted the offer of the owners to pay a compromise fine amounting to P40,000 for their crews’ liberty.

Compromise fine is allowed under Concepcion’s Municipal Fishery Ordinance No. 01 series of 2008, an adaptation of Republic Act 8550 or The Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998. (PIO)
