GOVERNOR Arthur Defensor Sr. will keynote the opening of Investment Fair organized by the Local Governance Support Program for Local Economic Development (LGSP-LED) on Tuesday, January 21, at Royal Garden Convention Center, Iloilo City.

The event, which will help promote Metro Iloilo and Guimaras as potential investment sites in the Philippines, is the highlight of the Winter Escapade -- It’s More Fun in the Philippines Tour of the Philippine Embassy of Canada.

The tour started last January 18 in Kalibo, Aklan with 300 delegates, mostly businessmen, from Canada. They then visited Caticlan, Malay, also in Aklan, on the following day and proceed to Iloilo for the Investment Fair.

The Investment Fair, according to LGSP-LED, will showcase, among others, the proposed Leganes Industrial Growth Center in Iloilo. This proposed project is designed for medium and heavy industries that will be mainly ship repair and building with wharf facilities.

If pursued, proponents are optimistic that the site can be a “world-class industrial center not only for shipbuilding, but also to other industries, which are highly linked into the trade and transportation sector performances.”

The proposed projects involve the construction of shipbuilding area and wharf development, and improvement of necessary infrastructure for efficient operation of sea transportation within the region.

Meanwhile, Secretary Manuel Roxas II of the Department of Interior and Local Development is expected to attend and discuss his department’s program on business-friendly and competitive local government units during the fair.

Secretary Gregory Domingo of the Department of Trade and Industry will also be present to talk about the investment opportunities in the country, while Canadian Chamber of Commerce Philippines executive director Cora De La Cruz will discuss the same for Canadian investors.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will also present the investment opportunities in Iloilo and Guimaras. After which will be the “business matching” to be assisted by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. (PR)
