Wednesday, January 8, 2014
THIRTY-SIX illegal fishermen have been arrested in the waters of northern Iloilo engaging in trawl fishing and Danish seine in separate patrol operations at Concepcion, Batad and Carles in Iloilo.
The Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force arrested last January 3 the first 14 fishermen, who were onboard F/B Alfre VI off Bago-isi Island, Barangay Talotoan, Concepcion.
Investigation revealed that the fishing boat was owned and operated by Municipal Council member Alfredo Manderico and its helmsman identified as Gerry Batinsa-an.
Another five fishermen onboard M/BCA Chivy were also nabbed on the same day for trawl fishing about 2.5 kilometers (km) from the shoreline of Bagongon Island in Concepcion. The suspects including the motorboat owner Cris Villaruz were all residents of Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
On January 6, Monday, seven fishermen onboard two unnamed motorboats were also arrested for using hulbot-hulbot while fishing off Mangalumbi Island in Batad.
The crew and the boat owners – Naptaly Alpazan and Jayson Cadungan – were residents of Barangays Pa-on, Estancia and San Salvador, Banate, all in northern Iloilo.
The task force also apprehended the 10 crew of F/B Ludy owned by Ludy Gregorio engaging in the same off Naburot Island in Carles.
The arrests were in line with Governor Arthur Defensor Sr.’s directive to intensify the campaign against illegal fishing despite the decrease in logistics due to Super Typhoon Yolanda.
All of the fishermen were turned over to the municipal police stations concerned while their fishing boats and gears were at the custody of the task force.
Only Ludy Gregorio offered and paid a compromise fine of P20,000 to the local government unit (LGU) for the liberty of their crew. (PIO)
