Macanuna tops open chessfest

NATIONAL Master (NM) Macala Macacuna of Davao City annexed the open division title of the 78th Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Araw ng Dabaw Open and Age-Group Chess tournament held at the NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove Function Hall over the weekend.

Macacuna edged fellow 5.5 pointer Lyndon Sombilon of Davao City via superior tiebreaks to pocket the cash prize of P5,000 while the latter settled for the runner-up prize of P2,500 in the event organized as part of the 78th Araw ng Davao Sports Festival.

Five-pointers Jason Salumbre of Panabo City, Reynaldo Gempero Jr. of Davao and Jun Mark Baldesimo of Cor Jesu College (CJC) grabbed the next three spots.


Cirilo Enobio, Adrian Alain Llanos, John Christian Lesaca, Jimzon Trangia and Harrison Maamo rounded up the top 10.

Special awardees were Barangay 5-A under captain Edgardo Ibuyan Jr. with players Macacuna, Jake and Reynaldo Gempero (Best Team Barangay), Chris Maynard Ampon of Davao del Sur(best elementary boys), Queen Peralta of Davao City (best elementary girls), Francis Xavier Guimalan of Davao City (best secondary boys), Frinze Ezra Banjo Ocliasa of Mati City (best secondary girls), Trangia of Holy Cross of Davao College (best college men), Quennie Galinada of CJC (best college women), Mary Israel Palero of Davao City (best female), Chris Cuntapay (best executive), Eric Fernandez (best employee), Baltazar Protacio (best senior) and Jobert Lumantad (best person with disability).

Meanwhile, Gino Angelo Asuncion and Ella Grace Moulic topped their respective events in the age-group competition.

Asuncion scored perfect five points to capture the boys 18-under title over Daniel Rome Borinaga (4.0) and Japheth Aaron Caresosa of Panabo City (3.5).

Moulic also swept her five games to rule the girls 18-under event at the expense of Mary Jonah Lequin of CJC and Ocliasa.

Jasper Pantalita and Lorraine Yngayo bagged the boys and girls 14-under events, respectively, Rodel Buenafe Jr. and Jan Chelsea Mendoza stamped their respective rivals for the boys and girls 10-under crowns.

Barangay Sasa (best 18-under team), Barangay Toril (best 14-under team) and Barangay Buhangin District (best 10-under team) also received prizes.

Cash, medals and trophies were given away to the winners in the two-day National Chess Federation of the Philippines-sanctioned tournament sponsored by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
