THE University of the Immaculate of Conception (UIC) and Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) stamped their respective rivals in the Philippine Volleyball Federation-sanctioned 29th Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte Kadayawan sa Dabaw Volleyball Invitational League at the Almedras Gym Davao City Recreation Center Saturday.

UIC recovered from a first set loss to survive a 20-25, 25-13, 25-15 win over Assumption College of Davao (ACD) in High School boys division.

The Achilles B. Luciano-mentored ACD squad capitalized on four successive errors UIC committed as they jumped off to a six point lead, 12-6, in the early going of the first set. UIC struggled to get their acts together as turnovers and errors mounted with ACD connecting on their smart witty drop shot attempts, securing them five straight ace points to claim the first set.

UIC coach Michael Angelo Bueño told his players during the team's huddle before the second set, "Wag kayong magrelax at bumawi kayo and presence of mind lang. Bigyan natin ng magandang first ball ang ating setter para makagawa tayong plays specifically for our attackers."

The UIC then unleashed their offensives behind the efforts of team captain Joshua Loewe Blanza as they seized a 12-1 advantage over the slumping ACD.

ACD team captain Janius Agaban, however, led a 6-0 rally to cut UIC's edge by six points. But the revitalized UIC spikers proved much too strong as they secured the second set to tie the match at 1-all.

Both teams figured in a series of lead changes and deadlocks at the start of the third frame but UIC managed to break away, 13-9, as they maximized ACD's miscues and they never looked back to wrap up the game.

Ateneo, meanwhile, spanked Jose Bastida Elementary School, 25-17,23-25, 25-19.

Games were still being played as of presstime in the meet organized by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.

Cash prizes, trophies and certificates await winners.

Quarter-finals, semis and finals matches are set today.
