Batucan, Moulic top seeds in Shell chess-A A +A

DAVAO City's John Ray Batucan and Ella Grace Moulic are top seeded players when the 22nd Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship Southern Mindanao leg unwraps at The Annex of SM City Davao today, August 30.
Local organizer Ronnie Tabudlong, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao on Friday, said Batucan, playing for Cor Jesu College of Digos, is entered in junior boys, and Moulic, a mainstay of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), will see action in junior girls in the two-day tournament that serves as qualifying for the national grand finals slated October 11 and 12 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.
A total of 300 woodpushers are vying for finals slots, cash prizes and trophies in the annual National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned event.
"Players from as far as Cagayan de Oro, Cebu City, Butuan City, Compostela Valley and Misamis Oriental are coming to give Davao players a stiff competition," Tabudlong said.
Only the first two male kiddies and juniors players will advance to the grand finals along with the top female kiddies and juniors chessers.
Cash prizes of P7,000, P6,000, P5,000 and P3,000 await the first four placers in juniors division while the top four kiddies players will take home P5,000, P4,000, P3,000 and P2,000. The top junior female player and top kiddie female player will pocket P5,000 and P3,000, respectively. They will also receive trophies.
The grand finals junior and kiddie champions will romp away with P30,000 and P20,000, respectively.
The juniors event is open to 15 to 20 years old while the kiddies is for seven to 14 years old. (MLSA)
