GLENDO Nayre and Rhene Laguda emerged as champions shared top honors at the close of the 2014 Kadayawan sa Dabaw Table Tennis tournament held recently at the Smashville Sports Center, Davao City.

Nayre, who hails from Hua Ching Foundation in Mandaue City, beat teammate Lauro Crisostomo, 4-3, in their singles open championship match. The latter settled for the runner-up honors while General Santos City's Jayjay Templado placed third.

Metro Davao Table Tennis Association (Medatta) player Rhene Laguda defeated Kenson Jimenez of Spin Davao, 4-2, for the singles executive title. Laguda placed second while Bill Yao of Hua Ching Foundation was third.


In class B, Bryan Pabelic of Iligan City clinched the men's title by demolishing Medatta's Bernie Tacay, 4-1, as Romelo Tipgos of Medatta/SpinDavao defeated Jinky Mamoko of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to finish third.

Meanwhile, Nayre, Crisostomo, Yap, and Jimboy Baring joined forces to annex the team title by beating Tatag members Jerson Tenchavez, Randy Sagolili and Kevin Hillado of General Santos City, 2-0. Tatag took the runner-up spot while the team of Medatta/Spin Davao's Jimenez, Alex Ang and Boyd Mearns placed third.

Organizer and tournament director Friendee Nuñez, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said the overall turnout of the event was successful.

"We feel like our main goal and purpose in organizing this tournament was achieved. Aside from promoting the sport of table tennis, we have inspired more players to continue with their play and effort in the sport," Nuñez said in vernacular.

Winners received cash prizes, medals, certificates, and trophies. The event is sponsored by Metro Davao Table Tennis Association (Medatta) president Dr. Louie Metran, Spin Davao owner Dennis Garcia, Medatta and Spin Davao members Kenston Jimenez, Dr. Marlon Garcia, and Harry Que, Pau de Arco.
