THE Montaña Pawnshop arranged a titular showdown against Goldstar Hardware after hacking out a 63-52 victory against MP Hotel Warriors as the 2014 Mayor Rodrigo and Paolo Duterte Kadayawan Commercial Basketball tournament resumed at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center Wednesday evening.

The Pawnbrokers unleashed their shooting prowess to beat the depleted MP Hotel Warriors.

The eight-division world boxing champion and Sarangani Congressman Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao along with brother Bobby Pacquiao both did not see action in the said game.

"Kelangan na niyang bumalik eh kasi may preparation pa siya for the upcoming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) draft this weekend," MP Hotel coach Arvin Bonleon told Sun.Star Davao.

The game went into a wild start as the Pawnbrokers erupted to a 12-3 early lead behind the solid start of Raymond Lamocha and Steve Acono. Montaña then took a 14-9 edge at the end of the first period.

The Warriors' costly errors and crucial turnovers also allowed Montaña to keep the momentum as Lamocha buried back-to-back layups to spark a 14-6 surge with 4:06 left in the second canto, 28-15.

Although Montaña's Acono got into an early foul trouble in the first half, MP Warriors import Victor Wade still failed to deliver despite being guarded by small defenders. Montaña secured a 32-24 halftime lead.

But Wade spearheaded a 9-3 rally at the start of the third frame to cut the deficit by just two points, 33-35, with still six minutes left but Montana's ace guard Biboy Clavel came right back and answered two straight jumpers to push the lead to five points, 40-35.

Clavel and Lamocha then combined efforts to turn back the tide to Montaña's favor while Warriors couldn't get their acts together as the Pawnbrokers burst into a 50-38 advantage heading into the final canto.

Warriors' Abby Santos and Louie Medalla, however, sparked a 12-3 spurt with only three minutes left in the game to cut the lead,55-50.

Montana tightened defense though to fend off any comeback attempt after Acono and Lamocha blocked two straight attempts of MP Hotel to secure the much-needed win.

Acono poured in 17 points while Lamocha added 13 points. Wade and Santos had 14 and 11 points, respectively, for MP Hotel Warriors.

Our players were still patient with their plays although MP warriors were trying to fight back. Defense made us win especially Steve who helped us not in offense and defense)."

He also said he's expecting a good match against Goldstar in the championship.

MP Hotel coach Bonleon, for his part, said:"Medyo naunahan sa umpisang game tapos nag-collapse na and hindi na naka-recover. Kahit sino pa papasukin naming sa game hindi na maka-contribute kasi nakuha na nila yung momentum eh."

The Royal Mandaya Hotel of the City Mayor's Office (TRMH-CMO), meanwhile, edged Goldstar Hardware, 72-71, behind Mike Harry and Mark Yee who sank identical 16 points for the Ronel Leuterio-mentored team.

Montaña, Goldstar and TRMH-CMO figured in a three-way tie with similar 2-1 win-loss record. Montaña and Goldstar, however, prevailed to grab the first two spots in the round-robin eliminations via the quotient system to arrange a titular clash.

Montaña Pawnshop beat TRMH-CMO, 74-63, while the latter escaped a one-point victory over Goldstar. Goldstar, for its part, defeated Montaña, 80-75. TRMH-CMO needed an eight-point victory over Goldstar to secure a finals berth but fell short.

Coach Leuterio, after TRMH-CMO beat Goldstar, said: "Wala akong magawa."

He earlier said it would be tough to beat Goldstar by eight points.

The battle for third pitting TRMH-CMO against MP Hotel Warriors was going on as of presstime. The Montaña-Goldstar finals was set to follow.

Cash prizes await winners in the cagefest sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino "Boy" Cua and presented by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
