FORMER International Boxing Organization (IBO) superflyweight Filipino champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong will fight in a tune-up bout on September 27 before he will try to avenge his July 19 split decision loss to South African Lwandile Sityatha in November at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center in Davao City.

Sonshine Sports Management Inc. executive director Manny Piñol, who guested in the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Center yesterday, said the Sept. 27 event will be dubbed as the "Clash of the Little Giants".

The rematch, however, was already scheduled before Dapudong's fight against Sityatha began.

"It was a rematch clause that I was able to negotiate with the promoter of the South African boxer that if Dapudong will be defeated by decision, a rematch in the Philippines particularly in Davao City will take place," Piñol said.

The former North Cotabato governor said he's expecting a very good fair revenge bout, thus, he wants to test Dapudong's skills against another South African boxer.

Other main bouts will also pit flyweight champions Rey Loreto and Denver Cuello against South African fighters.

Rey Loreto, a native of Davao del Norte and the reigning IBO-Junior flyweight, is the newest addition to the roster of boxers under the Sonshine Sports Management, Inc. of Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

"Loreto is expected to perform well in the said event to solidify his name among his fans that he is the reigning champion of IBO Junior flyweight division," Piñol added.

Former World Boxing Council minimum weight titlist Cuello, on the other hand, will make a return after his 14-month hiatus due to a shoulder injury during a fight against Xiong Zhao Zhong last June 28, 2013.

Meanwhile, Piñol said the hosting boxing events in Davao City is their own way of reviving the sport of boxing.

"Our vision is to make Davao as the home not only in boxing events but in all different sports," Pinol added.

Piñol, meanwhile, bared that they plan to add six more undercard fights, involving Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, a technical knockout winner against Indonesian Hendrick Barongasay.

In connection with the "Clash of the Little Giants" event, Sonshine Sports Management Inc., also plans to launch Sonshine Sports TV on the same day of the boxing event.

"Little by little we are reaching our goals in promoting the sport of boxing in Davao City. (KRP)
