CENOJAS Mix Martial Arts (CMMA) fighter Dennis Quiñonero beat Junior Diapolet of Fernan Club gym, Panabo City via majority decision in the main event of the Smokerfight organized as part of the just-concluded 1st Mindanao Mix Martial Arts Expo held at the Garden Oases Resort and Convention Center.

In the undercard, Empire Boxing gym's Arnold Garde quickly ended his match against Erwin Gumba of Observe gym in the 115 pounds division. Garde landed strong blows to the face of Gumba, forcing the referee to stop the match barely 32 seconds left in the first round.

Garde's brother Rodel, for his part, succumbed to his Panabo counterpart Rennie Binigya in the 119 pounds division.

In the 150 pounds event, Rogelio Enurables of CMMA defeated Gerby Hilot of Python's Pit.

Smokerfight MMA founder and Kinasang'an Foundation Inc. deputy executive director Dr. Vincent Vicente, in a separate interview, said the 1st Mindanao MMA expo was a success.

"So far the reception and acceptance of the audience was great so therefore I conclude it was a success," Dr. Vicente said.

Vicente said, "A total of 1,000 guests came during the event and some were not included because of the lack of tickets and it was more impressive because our fighters in Smokerfight did well."

He, however, is hesitant to conduct an MMA event soon although they have initial plans.
"It will be difficult for us to hold another event if it's not an income-generating type but if a private sponsor will mediate for us then it is possible," he added.

Marco Cenojas of CMMA, on the other hand, is proud of the achievements of his fighters.

Empire Boxing gym owner Fraz Pasquil, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao, said he's happy with the performance of his fighters.

"For the training of our fighters, we are under Cenojas MMA. So na train yun mga boxers kong ground game through Jemery Quiñonero of Cenojas MMA and Ruben Lanaza of AXC," Pasquil said.

Pasquil also said, "It's good way for Davao gyms to be under one roof and be united for a common cause which is to promote Davao and Mindanao MMA."

In the Basscon Xtreme workout launching in the expo, there were three participants but only two finished the workout. The latter received free Empire Boxing shirt and free boxing session.
